Is Nigeria going to the World Cup?

Victor Osimehn led the Super Eagles to a crucial 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday, October 14, scoring a sensational hat-trick. The win marked Nigeria’s biggest margin of victory since their 6–0 thrashing of São Tomé in 2023 ( another game in which Osimhen also grabbed a hat-trick.)

But this time, the stakes were higher: the dream of reaching the 2026 World Cup after missing out on Qatar 2022.

Despite the strong finish (17 points from 10 games), Nigeria narrowly missed the top spot in their qualifying group. South Africa clinched first place with 18 points, earning the automatic ticket to the World Cup.

What does this mean for Nigeria’s World Cup Dream?

Nigeria’s second-place finish secured them a spot in the African playoffs which consist of the four best second-placed teams from the continent’s nine qualifying groups. Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo.

This will be a single-elimination mini-tournament held in Morocco. The matchups for the semi-finals are:

  • Nigeria vs. Gabon
  • Cameroon vs. DR Congo

The winner of the final will earn Africa’s final spot in the Inter-confederation Playoff Tournament

The Inter-confederation Playoff Tournament

This is the final stage of qualification. The winner of the African playoff will join five other teams from around the world to compete for the last two spots at the 2026 World Cup.

The six teams in this tournament will be:

  • 1 from Africa (CAF)
  • 1 from Asia (AFC)
  • 1 from South America (CONMEBOL)
  • 1 from Oceania (OFC)
  • 2 from North America (CONCACAF)

These six teams will be split into two brackets of three, with each bracket producing one winner. The two winners will claim the final World Cup slots.

TL;DR

Nigeria isn’t through yet  but they’re still in the fight. With potentially 4 games to go,  the Super Eagles could still soar to the 2026 World Cup.
